Emissions Monitoring Program

All companies with an emission permit must have an emissions monitoring program.

Learn to create a program according to regulatory requirements, reflecting the actual emissions. Process knowledge is crucial to understand variation and to select representative samples.

Control charts help you quantify variation and uncertainty.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the requirements for an emissions monitoring program
  • Understand processes and causes of variation with process mapping
  • Select representative samples
  • Quantify process variation and measurement uncertainty
  • Use control charts to distinguish between common and special cause variation
  • Understand different approaches to reduce emissions
  • Determine measurement uncertainty and characteristics of the measurement method (precision, accuracy, stability, sensitivity, and capability)
  • Make emission calculations that reflect the actual emissions

Target audience

This course is suitable for you if you:

  • Are responsible for the environment and emissions program in your organization
  • Report emissions to authorities
  • Perform sampling and/or analyze samples
  • Conduct root cause analysis based on emission measurements
  • Optimize processes to reduce emissions
  • Use emission data and want to understand measurement uncertainty and process variation better
  • Want reliable measurements and want to learn to determine important characteristics of measurement methods

The course covers:

  1. Regulatory requirements for the emissions monitoring program
  2. Establishing a measurement program
    • Determine relevant emission components & sources
    • Map the processes and emissions
    • Select frequency, measurement point & method
    • Calculation of emissions and uncertainty
  3. Understanding process variation
    • Map processes and understand sources of variation
    • Distinguish between normal and special variation
    • Use of control charts to quantify variation
    • Set the right focus to meet emission requirements
  4. Measurement uncertainty
    • Determine measurement uncertainty and characteristics of the measurement method (MSA)
  5. Calculate emissions and uncertainty
    • Representative measurement
    • Uncertainty calculations

Galton board

The Galton board is used to understand the concept of normal and special variation, histogram, and basic statistics.

We generate data from the Galton board and create control charts.

We check how adjustments based on single measurements affect the variation in the process.

We calculate process variation and measurement uncertainty using control charts.

Practical information

Courses can be arranged on request and customized to your business needs.

Your own data can be used in examples and exercises.

Open courses are arranged according to the Course Calendar.

You can start e-learning when you want. You have access for a year and unlimited attempts to successfully complete multiple-choice exam.

Lunch, refreshments, and drinks during classroom training are included, and you receive a course completion certificate.
